Hyundai is set to bolster its presence in the high-performance electric vehicle (EV) market with the anticipated release of the IONIQ 6 N, marking the brand’s foray into exceptionally fast and powerful street-legal vehicles. Following the recent North American debut of the high-performance IONIQ 5 N at the LA Auto Show, the automaker is reportedly gearing up for an even speedier model.

The IONIQ 5 N, featuring a two-stage inverter and an 84kWh battery, impressed enthusiasts with its 641 horsepower capability when the N Grin Boost is engaged. This sports EV, built on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform, incorporates technologies from its electrified “Rolling Labs” concepts, delivering three distinct performance attributes: Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability, and Everyday Sportscar. With N Launch Control and Grin Boost activated, the IONIQ 5 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 3.25 seconds.

While Hyundai plans to unveil the IONIQ 5 N’s range and torque specifications closer to its expected US dealership debut in March, reports suggest the automaker is already eyeing an even more powerful IONIQ 6 N.

According to Australia’s Drive, Hyundai is actively developing the IONIQ 6 N, expanding its electric N lineup. Although Hyundai has not officially confirmed these plans, the report indicates that the next N electric vehicle is in progress, with a projected showroom arrival around 2025.

Hyundai had previously showcased its interest in an N-inspired IONIQ 6 with the RN22e concept, based on the E-GMP platform utilized by the IONIQ 6. With a sleek and aerodynamic design boasting a Cd of 0.218, the IONIQ 6 is positioned as an ideal performance model. The concept featured enhancements such as wheel air curtains, a rear spoiler, and a substantial rear diffuser to optimize aerodynamics.

The RN22e concept also introduced the N brand’s first four-wheel-drive system, employing electric motors on both the front and rear axles. The performance EV generated around 580 horsepower and 740 Nm maximum torque, albeit slightly less than the IONIQ 5 N’s impressive 601 horsepower (641 with N Grin Boost).

Albert Biermann, former Hyundai N development boss, expressed optimism about the IONIQ 6, describing it as “a very nice car for N” in an earlier statement to Drive. As Hyundai continues to position itself in the competitive electric performance vehicle segment, the IONIQ 6 N is expected to contribute to the brand’s pursuit of higher power and speed in the electric domain.
