Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian has unveiled the anticipated range capabilities of its new dual-motor R1T model, making a notable stride in the EV market. This disclosure comes as Rivian continues to establish itself as a major player in the burgeoning electric vehicle sector.
In a recent social media update, Rivian confirmed that both the Dual-Motor and Performance Dual-Motor variants of the R1T are poised to deliver what the company dubs as the “best range in our lineup.” When paired with Rivian’s Max battery pack, the Dual-Motor R1T is estimated to achieve an EPA-rated range of 410 miles, showcasing a substantial driving range. The range estimate with the larger battery pack stands at 352 miles. It’s important to note that these figures are contingent on the use of 21-inch wheels, which contribute to the vehicle’s overall range performance. The equivalent range statistics for Rivian’s R1S SUV are still pending, according to the company.

This announcement follows the opening of reservations for the Dual-Motor and Performance Dual-Motor R1T models earlier this year. To provide an experiential understanding of their innovative offering, Rivian extended invitations to a group of journalists for a visit to its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois. This exclusive encounter included test drives of the R1T and a firsthand experience of the newly introduced Enduro drive unit, a technological advancement that has been integrated across Rivian’s entire product lineup.

Rivian’s focus on the Enduro drive unit has been consistent, emphasizing its potential to enhance both vehicle range and performance. The company’s in-house production strategy has also been highlighted as a cost-saving measure, reducing dependence on external suppliers. The newly released range figures align with previous speculations, reinforcing Rivian’s claim to supremacy in the realm of electric adventure vehicles.
In the rapidly evolving landscape of electric vehicles, competition among manufacturers is intense, particularly in the segment of long-range, high-performance electric trucks and SUVs. Rivian’s advantage as an early entrant is evident, with its R1T hitting the market in 2021.
While Rivian maintains a leading position, other contenders like the Ford F-150 Lightning have emerged in the same arena. Yet, Rivian has strategically utilized its head start to streamline production processes. Recently, the company celebrated a significant threefold increase in production and deliveries during the second quarter of this year.
Despite the commendable range of 350ā400 miles, a higher range remains a focal point for many automakers. Ram, for instance, has showcased a long-range version of its Ram 1500 Rev boasting an impressive 500-mile range. Likewise, Tesla’s Elon Musk has previously hinted at a tri-motor configuration for the Cybertruck, accompanied by a target range of 500 miles.
Rivian, however, has consistently emphasized a range of over 400 miles. Since its unveiling in 2018, the R1T has been marketed with an estimated 400-mile range facilitated by the 180kWh Max battery pack. Even the standard large battery pack offers an EPA-estimated range of 314 miles. This strategic approach aligns with Rivian’s focus on catering to adventurous off-road enthusiasts, for whom each additional mile matters.
