Rivian has introduced a suite of new features in its latest software update, including hands-free driving via its Enhanced Highway Assist system and a new “Rally” drive mode designed for off-road performance.
The over-the-air (OTA) update continues the company’s strategy of refining vehicle performance and user experience through software enhancements.
The newly launched Enhanced Highway Assist allows hands-free driving for extended periods on compatible highways, available to owners of Rivian’s second-generation R1S and R1T models. The system employs an infrared camera in the rearview mirror to monitor driver attention, rather than requiring intermittent steering input.

“Later this year, we will expand our hands-free, eyes-on system to more highways and select roads,” Rivian stated. The automaker also plans to introduce a hands-off, eyes-off feature under controlled conditions next year.
Developed in-house, Rivian’s Autonomy Platform integrates 11 cameras and five radars for 360-degree visibility. The company claims its cameras have the “highest resolution of any vehicle in North America,” while its radar system enhances long-range object detection.

The onboard compute module processes more than 200 trillion operations per second, making it “likely the most powerful computer its customers own,” according to Rivian.
Beyond autonomy improvements, the update introduces “Rally” mode for performance dual-motor variants. Designed for off-road conditions such as dirt, ice, and mud, the mode sharpens steering and throttle response. Rivian has also unlocked a post-purchase
Performance Upgrade option, allowing Gen 1 and Gen 2 Dual-Motor vehicles equipped with Standard, Large, or Max battery packs to increase power output. For $5,000, the upgrade delivers up to 665 horsepower and 829 lb-ft of torque, alongside additional drive modes: Sport, Rally, and Soft Sand.

Additional features include an improved range estimator that accounts for different wheel types, automatic mirror tilt in reverse, and a remote charge port door closure via the Rivian app.
The update also introduces “Go Chime,” a gentle alert notifying drivers when traffic ahead has resumed moving, initially available on Gen 2 models with a planned rollout for Gen 1 vehicles.
