Rivian has filed a patent for wheel covers with active aerodynamic elements aimed at improving the efficiency of its electric vehicles, according to a recent disclosure by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The patent, originally submitted in August 2023 and published on Mar. 6, describes wheel covers featuring movable openings that can align with wheel spokes in one position and create a smooth surface in another.

A spring mechanism would rotate the cover between positions, allowing for adaptability based on driving conditions.
“Active wheel covers could help evacuate built-up air pressure from the wheel wells—further improving aerodynamic performance,” Rivian noted in the filing.
The automaker also suggested that, when open, the covers could aid in cooling, similar to the active grille shutters used in many modern vehicles.

Aerodynamics remain a challenge for electric SUVs and pickup trucks due to their boxy shapes. Other automakers have explored similar solutions, including Stellantis, which patented a deployable rear step with an integrated diffuser for pickups.
Hyundai has also tested an active air skirt that showed a 2.8% drag reduction in trials using a Genesis GV60, though the company has not announced production plans.
