Rivian, the American electric vehicle manufacturer, has filed a patent application for a new in-bed storage system for its pickup trucks. The patent, published by the US Patent and Trademark Office on April 6th, outlines an innovative design featuring storage bins built into the sides of the truck bed. While this concept is similar to the Ram Box system already available on Ram trucks, Rivian’s version is more elaborate.

The patent application showcases how the entire outside bed panels of Rivian’s trucks can fold down, revealing multiple storage compartments and cutouts on either side of the bed for longer items. This system is not just about storage, as the fold-out panels could also double up as seating, with a fold-out table potentially included. Additionally, there is a power outlet available once the panels are opened, allowing for easy device charging.

Rivian has previously filed other patent applications for designs aimed at enhancing utility, such as telescoping and folding tailgates and a tailgate step. However, it is currently unclear whether this new in-bed storage system will be integrated into the company’s current R1T or upcoming vehicles based on the R2 platform, which is slated to launch in 2026.

Interestingly, General Motors has also filed a trademark application for a Multistow tailgate, indicating that it is looking to include some storage in the tailgate of its own pickup trucks. Meanwhile, Ram seems content with its existing Ram Boxes, which were shown unchanged on the Ram 1500 REV at the 2023 New York Auto Show.

Rivian’s latest patent application is a clear indication of the company’s commitment to offering innovative solutions to its customers. The in-bed storage system is a welcome addition to its already impressive lineup of features, and it will be interesting to see how it is received by consumers once it becomes available. With electric vehicles becoming increasingly popular, it is important for manufacturers to differentiate themselves with unique and useful features like Rivian’s in-bed storage system.
