Rivian has unveiled a new “California Dune Edition” for its Tri-Motor R1 lineup, offering exclusive colors and a suite of off-road-focused enhancements. The limited-edition variant is designed for customers seeking improved rugged performance while retaining the core capabilities of the R1T and R1S.
The California Dune Edition introduces a new exterior and interior color scheme inspired by the sandy landscapes of California’s desert dunes. While Rivian had previously teased the launch with images of sand dunes and a monochrome vehicle silhouette, the final announcement confirms that the update extends beyond just aesthetics.

Instead of Rivian’s new “Ascend” interior—standard on all other Tri-Motor R1 models—the California Dune Edition features the more rugged “Adventure” interior, prioritizing durability over luxury. This means customers will forgo premium features such as passenger lumbar adjustment and an electrochromic roof but will gain enhanced functionality for off-road excursions.
“The California Dune Edition is designed for those who want to push the limits of off-road capability,” Rivian said in a statement.
Off-Road Enhancements
Beyond its distinct color scheme, the California Dune Edition includes Rivian’s All-Terrain Package as standard. This package equips the vehicle with smaller wheels, allowing for larger tire sidewalls and improved off-road performance, a spare tire for added security, and a reinforced underbody shield for protection against rough terrain.

Additionally, the edition features a range of practical off-road accessories, such as a pair of MAXTRAX recovery boards with a dedicated mount. These boards help drivers regain traction when stuck in deep sand, a common challenge in desert environments. The package also includes a dark cargo crossbar set and a powered tonneau cover for the R1T pickup.
Aesthetically, the California Dune Edition comes with an exclusive badging element to differentiate it from the standard R1 models. Customers can choose between dark or light-colored wheels, with the lighter option designed to complement the new exterior color.
Pricing and Availability
Despite the added off-road capabilities, Rivian has maintained the same base price for the California Dune Edition as its standard Tri-Motor R1 models. The R1T pickup starts at $99,900, while the R1S SUV is priced at $105,900.

The California Dune Edition is available for order now via Rivian’s website. It will also be displayed in person at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, from March 7-15 at Rivian’s Electric Roadhouse. The company has encouraged potential buyers to check its website for further details on availability in their region.
