The New South Wales government has announced a significant investment to expand fast electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the state, with public funding of AUD 16.1 million supplemented by AUD 41.2 million in private sector investment. The initiative aims to deliver rapid charging hubs powered entirely by renewable energy, enabling EVs to recharge from 10% to 80% in under 15 minutes.
While detailed technical specifications for the chargers have not yet been disclosed, the government revealed key recipients of the funding, including BP, Energy Australia, Plus ES, Tesla, and NRMA. The new fast chargers will be installed in multiple suburbs, designed with accessibility in mind, featuring pull-through bays to accommodate drivers towing caravans, boats, and trailers.
Minister for Climate Change and Energy Penny Sharpe emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “Making charging faster and eliminating range anxiety are key to getting more EVs on the road in NSW. These charging stations will make it easier to charge EVs away from home, while also helping to reduce climate pollution.”
Maryanne Stuart, Member for Heathcote, welcomed the investment, noting, “I’m thrilled to see the Minns Labor Government investment in construction of a well-connected charging network across NSW. We are already seeing the benefits of NSW Government investment here in Heathcote where today I have cut a ribbon to celebrate BP’s newest EV charging station, making it easier for EV drivers to hit the road quickly.”
This announcement follows a series of electrification efforts in New South Wales, including an order for 319 battery electric buses from several manufacturers earlier this year and the rollout of the country’s largest kerbside EV charger network launched in May. Recently, the government also hosted a free community event to raise awareness of EV technology and offer workshops on charging, featuring family-friendly activities to encourage adoption.
