Tesla CEO Elon Musk has responded to recent reports suggesting that the automaker was poised to win a $400 million contract from the U.S. Department of State to supply armored electric vehicles (EVs).
The contract, initially listed as part of the U.S. Department of State’s Procurement List for 2025, was widely anticipated to involve the supply of armored electric vehicles, with the Cybertruck seen as a likely candidate. However, the list was later updated to remove Tesla’s name from the award listing, prompting questions about the status of the deal.

Musk addressed the reports by stating, “I’m pretty sure Tesla isn’t getting $400m. No one mentioned it to me, at least,” dismissing the idea that the company was assured of securing the contract. While the public list indicated the potential for such a contract under the previous White House administration, it does not guarantee an award.

Despite the uncertainty, there are still plans for the U.S. government to introduce a fleet of both armored and standard EVs, and Tesla remains a strong contender due to its domestic manufacturing capabilities and track record.

In the U.S., Tesla’s Model Y was ranked as the most American vehicle in a Cars.com study, further strengthening its position. However, the Cybertruck was disqualified from consideration due to its weight, and other automakers will need to demonstrate their capacity to meet the government’s manufacturing needs.
The future of these government contracts remains unclear, but Tesla’s prominence in the EV market makes it a key player in the ongoing discussions.
