Tesla has confirmed the arrival of two highly anticipated variants of the new 2026 Model Y: the Performance trim and a seven-seat configuration, both expected to launch later this year. The announcement was made during a recent episode of Jay Leno’s Garage, which showcased the updated Model Y.
While Tesla has yet to disclose full specifications, the new Model Y Performance is expected to feature enhancements similar to those in the refreshed Model 3 Performance, such as a more powerful rear motor, increased torque, and upgraded adaptive suspension. If these upgrades are carried over, the Model Y Performance could see its 0-100 km/h acceleration time improve from 3.7 seconds to approximately 3.4 seconds, potentially making it one of the fastest SUVs in its class.

Historically, Tesla’s Performance trims have been known for their impressive acceleration, superior handling, and premium features. The updated Model Y Performance is expected to continue this trend, with additional power boosts and handling refinements, including a reworked suspension system, wider tires for better grip, upgraded brake pads for enhanced stopping power, and a track mode feature.
In addition to the Performance variant, Tesla is also reintroducing the seven-seat configuration, which was first made available in early 2021. While the 2026 Model Y currently only offers the standard five-seat option, the seven-seat version will return later this year. The overall shape of the Model Y is unchanged, so it is expected that the seating layout will mirror the previous seven-seat variant, with the third row intended for children or smaller adults.

Although Tesla has not yet revealed specific launch dates, both the Performance trim and the seven-seat configuration are expected to be available before the end of 2025. If the timeline mirrors that of the new Model 3 Performance, which debuted around eight months after the redesigned Model 3, the Model Y Performance could arrive around September or October.
Pricing for the Performance trim has not yet been announced, but it will likely depend on whether Tesla includes it in the Launch Series, which could increase the cost. The seven-seat configuration, which previously added approximately US$3,000 to the price of the Model Y, is expected to maintain a similar pricing structure.
