Tesla has begun racetrack testing of the upcoming 2026 Model Y Performance, marking the latest phase in development ahead of its expected launch next quarter. The camouflaged vehicle was seen undergoing laps at the Nürburgring circuit, signaling Tesla’s efforts to finalize tuning of the performance-oriented variant of its best-selling SUV.
The 2026 Model Y Performance is part of a broader refresh for the lineup, codenamed Project Juniper. Alongside aesthetic updates such as new front and rear light bars and a more aerodynamic body, the Performance trim is anticipated to feature a dual-motor configuration capable of 510 horsepower, a notable increase from the current 456HP offered in the 2024 model. The update brings the Model Y Performance closer in specifications to the Model 3 Performance, Tesla’s smaller high-output sedan.
With its revised powertrain, improved drag coefficient, and a reportedly lighter structure, the new Model Y Performance is expected to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.7 seconds, offering a performance gain over the outgoing model. Although it will not match the sub-3-second figures of the Model X Plaid, it is likely to be priced more competitively, particularly when factoring in available federal tax incentives.
Tesla is also expected to introduce a seven-seat configuration for the refreshed Model Y, previously teased in a company newsletter.
Track testing of the Performance variant appears focused on suspension tuning, as footage from the Nürburgring suggests improved cornering stability and reduced body roll during high-speed maneuvers.
