Japanese charging infrastructure provider Terra Charge plans to introduce the North American Charging Standard (NACS) across its network from fiscal year 2028, with the company targeting 2,500 NACS charging points nationwide by the end of fiscal year 2033.
The charging points will be gradually installed at commercial facilities, along major transport routes and at hotels as Terra Charge prepares for wider adoption of the connector standard in Japan.
NACS Expansion Begins in 2028
Terra Charge plans to begin deploying NACS chargers in fiscal 2028. The company reported 1,323 publicly registered NACS charging points across Japan as of August 19, although NACS currently represents only a small portion of the country’s overall charging infrastructure.

Japan has around 68,000 charging points in total, with most using the CHAdeMO standard, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
Terra Charge’s planned NACS expansion will therefore add another connector standard to Japan’s existing charging infrastructure rather than immediately replacing CHAdeMO.

Terra Charge Plans NACS AC Charging
The company will not limit its NACS rollout to DC fast chargers. Terra Charge is also examining the development of an NACS-compatible AC charger for locations where vehicles remain parked for longer periods.
Potential applications include hotels and multi-family residential buildings.
Terra Charge plans to introduce a prototype as soon as possible before moving toward commercialization. The company has not yet disclosed technical specifications or a firm launch schedule for the AC charger.
Preparing for Wider NACS Adoption
According to Nikkei Asia, Terra Charge is initially addressing demand from Tesla drivers in Japan through the expansion of NACS infrastructure.
However, the company expects NACS adoption to extend beyond Tesla as additional automakers introduce vehicles using the connector. Terra Charge is also preparing its network for the broader adoption of Plug & Charge technology.

NACS was originally developed by Tesla and has subsequently gained wider adoption among automakers, particularly in North America. General Motors, for example, plans to equip its Chevrolet, Cadillac and GMC electric vehicles with native NACS ports beginning with the 2027 model year.
Some older EVs can also access NACS charging stations using adapters.
Terra Charge Expands Overall Network
NACS will remain a relatively small part of Terra Charge’s broader Japanese charging network. The company has existing plans to significantly expand its charging infrastructure using multiple charging standards.
Terra Charge expects its total network to reach 105,000 charging points across Japan by the end of fiscal 2030.

Separately, the Japanese government has set a target of 300,000 EV charging points nationwide by the end of 2030 across all charging infrastructure providers and connector types.
Terra Charge’s NACS rollout is intended to position the company for potential growth in demand for the connector while maintaining support for the charging standards already widely deployed across Japan.
