WeRide has been selected as the technology provider for an autonomous driving pilot project in Switzerland. The project, funded by the Canton of Zurich and Swiss national railway SBB, and managed by the Swiss Transit Lab (STL), will demonstrate WeRide’s Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving capabilities.
The pilot is set to begin in mid-2025 with two autonomous vehicles, expanding to a fleet of up to 12 vehicles by 2026. The service will operate in suburban areas of Zurich, including Otelfingen, Boppelsen, Hüttikon, and Dänikon, with potential future expansion to Buchs, Dällikon, and Regensdorf. Residents will be able to book rides via an app provided by ioki, a European on-demand mobility solutions provider.
This project aims to address transportation challenges in suburban areas by supplementing the existing public transit network. The fleet will operate in unmanned mode for up to five years, offering data on the integration of autonomous vehicles into public transportation systems.
WeRide’s founder and CEO, Tony Han, noted that the project highlights the company’s ongoing efforts to advance autonomous driving solutions in Europe. This is WeRide’s third European project in recent months, following the launch of an autonomous minibus at Zurich Airport and an autonomous shuttle service at the 2024 French Open in Paris.
