BYD has opened its 10,000th flash charging station in China, reaching half of its full-year deployment target as the electric vehicle manufacturer rapidly expands its self-built ultra-fast charging network. The milestone station is located in Shenzhen’s Longhua district.
The new station was announced on Friday at BYD’s flagship flash charging facility in the city, less than five months after the company commissioned its 5,000th station.
Flash Charging Network Doubles in Five Months
BYD placed its 5,000th flash charging station into operation on April 1. Reaching 10,000 stations by August 28 means the network has doubled in less than five months.
The network now extends beyond China’s major metropolitan areas, with charging stations operating in locations including Hulunbuir, Sanya, Shuangyashan and Kashgar.
BYD said its charging network has the largest self-built footprint and broadest geographic coverage among Chinese automakers, while also reaching the 10,000-station milestone faster than other domestic manufacturers.
20,000-Station Target Requires Faster Deployment
BYD continues to target 20,000 flash charging stations in China by the end of 2026.
The company therefore needs to add another 10,000 stations during the remaining roughly four months of the year. From August 29 through year-end, this would require an average deployment rate of around 80 stations per day.
That pace would be more than twice the average rate achieved during the previous five months.
BYD plans to build 18,000 of the targeted 20,000 stations in cooperation with charging-network operators. The remaining 2,000 stations are planned for highway locations.
Network Attracts More Than 1.8 Million Users
BYD said its flash charging network has delivered a cumulative 210 million kWh of electricity in less than six months of operation.
More than 1.83 million users have accessed the network during that period, with vehicles from other manufacturers accounting for nearly one-third of users.
The network is open to EVs from other brands, although charging speeds depend on the individual vehicle’s battery and charging capabilities.
BYD has partnered with companies including Sinopec, PetroChina, CNOOC, Teld and JD.com to support the deployment of additional charging stations and broaden network coverage.
1,500 kW Flash Charging System
BYD unveiled its latest-generation flash charging technology in March, with a maximum output of up to 1,500 kW per connector.
Each charger is equipped with two connectors.
When combined with BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery, the system can charge a compatible vehicle from 10% to 97% in nine minutes, according to the company.
The high-power charging technology is designed to support BYD’s newer electric vehicles and reduce charging times through substantially higher power delivery.
BYD Expands Flash Charging Overseas
BYD is also preparing to take its flash charging technology into international markets.
The company has already installed its first flash charging stations in the United Kingdom and plans to deploy 300 stations there by the end of 2026.
The overseas rollout extends BYD’s charging strategy beyond China and is intended to support the company’s growing electric vehicle business in international markets.
