Toyota Motor has formed strategic partnerships with several energy providers in Europe to offer smart energy solutions for charging electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, including preparations for Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology, the company said. The initiative will cover charging at home, at workplaces and on the road, as part of Toyota’s broader push to integrate mobility with energy systems.
Toyota Motor Europe, based in Cologne, said the collaborations are designed to combine automotive and energy-sector capabilities. “These collaborations aim to create a unique value proposition by combining Toyota’s mobility expertise with the energy sector’s capabilities in grid flexibility, renewable integration, and digital energy services,” the company said in a statement. The first phase will focus on so-called Demand Side Response (DSR) solutions, scheduled to be introduced from 2026.
Under the DSR programmes, customers will be able to benefit from lower energy costs through smart charging that automatically shifts charging to off-peak periods. Charging can be managed and monitored through dedicated smartphone apps, and in some markets, users may also receive financial incentives for participating in grid stabilisation schemes. The system is also designed to support renewable energy use by prioritising charging during periods of high green power availability.
In Germany, Toyota will offer the services in partnership with The Mobility House Energy, while in the UK the company is working with British Gas. The first results of the partnerships are expected to emerge in 2026 with the launch of DSR solutions in both countries. Toyota also confirmed plans to introduce V2G technology in Europe at a later stage, although no specific markets or timelines have been disclosed so far. Technical details of the bidirectional charging systems remain undisclosed, though The Mobility House Energy primarily focuses on AC-based bidirectional charging solutions.

Leon Van Der Merwe, Vice President of Circular Economy and Energy Business at Toyota Motor Europe, said the energy partnerships form part of the group’s wider electrification strategy. “This initiative is a key milestone in Toyota’s broader electrification strategy and supports its ambition to contribute to a more sustainable society,” he said. “By enabling smart, flexible, and green charging, Toyota is helping to shape a future where mobility and energy work hand in hand for the benefit of customers, communities, and the planet.”
