In an eagerly awaited announcement, Tesla has revealed an upcoming major software update for its vehicles, set to roll out this spring. The update includes a revamped user interface, the introduction of ‘Auto Shift Beta’, native Audible integration, an updated Spotify app, and several other enhancements.

One of the key visual changes in the update is the immersive full-screen vehicle controls when parked, offering a sleek and modern interface. Additionally, there will be larger playback controls and quick access to recent, favorite, and upcoming media in the player, enhancing the overall user experience.

For Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles manufactured from 2021 onwards, the update will introduce ‘Auto Shift Beta’, a feature that enables automatic shifting between Drive (D) and Reverse (R) based on the vehicle’s surroundings. This feature aligns with Tesla’s move to eliminate the drive gear stalk, requiring drivers to use the screen to change gears.

Tesla is also expanding its native app offerings, with the introduction of a native Audible app for audiobook lovers. The existing native Spotify app is also receiving an update, allowing users to queue tracks across vehicles and devices, along with adjustable playback speed.

Furthermore, Tesla is introducing ‘Hands-Free Trunk’ functionality for Model S/X 2021 and later, as well as upgraded Model 3 vehicles. By standing still behind the trunk with their phone key, users can prompt the trunk to open automatically.

In terms of safety and convenience, Tesla is making Sentry Mode videos reviewable from notifications, providing users with greater peace of mind. The update also includes an increase in regenerative braking on highways for refreshed Model S/X vehicles from 2021 onwards, enabling more energy to be returned to the battery at high speeds.

Additionally, Tesla is addressing the age-old question of “are we there yet?” by enabling rear passengers to view current trip details, time, and temperature at the top of the rear touchscreen, eliminating the need for constant inquiries from the back seat.

While Tesla has not provided an exact timeline for the rollout of this update, it is expected to be gradually pushed to the fleet in the coming weeks, bringing a host of exciting new features and improvements to Tesla owners worldwide.
