Tesla is recalling more than 46,000 Cybertrucks in the United States due to a potential issue with an exterior panel that could detach while driving, according to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Thursday.
The recall covers vehicles manufactured between November 2023 and February 27, 2024, and represents the majority of Cybertrucks currently on the road, based on analyst estimates.

Tesla said the issue involves a stainless-steel exterior trim panel that may loosen or detach, creating a possible road hazard. The company acknowledged 151 warranty claims potentially linked to the defect but reported no accidents or injuries. Owners may notice noise inside the vehicle or visibly see the panel becoming loose or detaching.
The recall marks the eighth for the Cybertruck since January 2024 and comes amid growing scrutiny over Tesla’s quality control.

Industry analysts noted that large-scale recalls of body panels highlight concerns about manufacturing standards. Sam Fiorani, vice president at AutoForecast Solutions, said such issues can significantly impact Tesla’s reputation, which has been built over years.
Tesla has faced weakening demand for the Cybertruck, following multiple production delays. While the recall is unlikely to significantly impact overall sales—Tesla delivered 1.79 million vehicles in 2024—it adds to broader concerns about quality control and brand perception, as customer sentiment shifts and protests emerge at Tesla stores across the U.S.
