Scania, SKF, LOTS Group, and Ahréns Åkeri have launched one of Europe’s longest routes for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), with the goal of significantly reducing carbon emissions and improving transport efficiency. The project, which will span 221,000 kilometers annually, is expected to cut CO₂ emissions by 298 tonnes—equivalent to the emissions of 210 passenger cars in Sweden.

The initiative aims to achieve 85% utilization of the vehicles over their yearly mileage, focusing on full load efficiency. Full-scale operations are scheduled for mid-2025 after initial validations in early 2025. The partners are also aiming to demonstrate that sustainable transport solutions can be economically viable by securing stable volumes and long-term contracts.

The collaboration integrates Scania’s control tower and LOTS Group’s digital tools, including route optimization and charging management, to ensure the highest levels of operational efficiency. “Through partnerships between transport buyers, carriers, and charging providers, we maximize utilization and reduce emissions, setting a benchmark for logistics in Europe,” said Johan Palmqvist, Managing Director Europe for LOTS Group.

Måns Isacsson, Logistics Manager for SKF Sverige, also emphasized the environmental benefits of the partnership, noting, “This collaboration ensures environmentally friendly transports to our customers, supporting our ambition for net zero climate impact across the value chain.”

The project aims to balance vehicle utilization and charging strategies for maximum operational and environmental efficiency. Ahréns Åkeri’s Hampus Ahrén pointed out, “Stable volumes and optimized charging enable investments in green technology, making this partnership both sustainable and economically advantageous.”

Gustaf Sundell, Head of Scania Ventures and New Business, added, “This collaboration demonstrates that freight transport with BEVs is feasible for long-distance and heavy loads, aligning with Scania’s purpose of driving the shift toward sustainable transport.”
