Three major Plug & Charge network operators—Hubject, Gireve, and Irdeto—have announced a strategic partnership aimed at achieving interoperability between their platforms, enabling electric vehicle (EV) drivers to access a wider range of Plug & Charge stations without additional registrations.
The agreement will allow the companies to integrate their platforms via application programming interfaces (APIs), granting approximately four million Plug & Charge-capable EVs immediate access to thousands of additional charging points worldwide. The move is expected to streamline the charging process for users by allowing them to plug in, initiate charging, and receive billing automatically—without the need for cards or RFID authentication.
Currently, each partner manages its own Plug & Charge network in cooperation with charge point operators (CPOs) and eMobility service providers (EMPs), adhering to the ISO 15118.02 standard. This standard ensures a consistent, secure communication protocol between the vehicle and charger, creating a seamless experience for the end user.
The partnership marks a shift toward a more unified approach in the EV charging sector. With interoperability, automakers, CPOs, and EMPs can work with any one of the three companies and still gain access to the collective Plug & Charge ecosystem, reducing market fragmentation and increasing user convenience.
In a statement, the companies highlighted their shared goal of avoiding siloed Plug & Charge systems that could result in poor user experience. The initial stage of the collaboration focuses on establishing API connectivity, with plans to expand into coordinated technical development aimed at future scalability.
