Electric vehicle manufacturer Nio is set to introduce a single-motor option in its first model under the sub-brand codenamed ‘Alps.’ The decision comes as the company aims to target the RMB 200,000 ($27,980) – RMB 300,000 price range, a key segment in Nio’s push into the mass market. The addition of a single-motor model will provide greater flexibility to the brand’s strategy, according to a recent report from 36kr.
Alps’ debut model will take the form of a sedan and will feature a new generation of in-house developed and produced motors. The single-motor version aims to optimize size and cost, making it an attractive option for consumers in the specified price range.
Furthermore, ‘Alps’ will be the first sub-brand to utilize Nio’s next-generation technology platform, NT 3.0. This platform will incorporate an 800 V high-voltage architecture, enhancing the battery swap and ultra-fast charging experience for users.

Alps’ first model will offer two versions of the battery pack, with capacities of around 60 kWh and 90 kWh. These batteries will be compatible with Nio’s third-generation battery swap stations, featuring a thinner design to create more space in the vehicle’s cockpit.
Previously, Nio’s main brand had been exclusively equipped with dual motors. However, the new sub-brand ‘Alps’ provides the opportunity to explore a single-motor option, especially following a price reduction on June 12. The adjustment allowed for the setup of a single-motor program, providing the brand with increased flexibility in its offerings.
The introduction of the NT 3.0 platform and the use of 800 V high-voltage technology will further elevate ‘Alps’ as a significant player in Nio’s future plans. The brand plans to concentrate cutting-edge technology and a more flexible business strategy within ‘Alps,’ making it one of their most important initiatives for the upcoming year.
Confirming their entry into the mass market through sub-brands, Nio unveiled two sub-brands, codenamed ‘Alps’ and ‘Firefly,’ aiming to target distinct market segments. The ‘Alps’ lineup, built on the NT 3.0 platform, is expected to support high-voltage fast charging, with mass production and delivery anticipated in the second half of 2024.
Meanwhile, Nio’s other sub-brand, ‘Firefly,’ aimed at the lower-mid-range market, also advances with its first model. Having received design approval and proceeding to the mold development phase, the ‘Firefly’ project gains momentum, much to the satisfaction of its nearly 1,000 employees.
As Nio continues to prepare for the future, the ‘Alps’ sub-brand stands out as a promising addition to the company’s portfolio, offering both strategic market flexibility and advanced technology solutions for electric vehicle enthusiasts.
