Nearly half of Americans intend to purchase an electric vehicle (EV) within the next five years, with 21% planning to do so in the next one to two years, according to a new survey by Verra Mobility.

The report, titled The State of EVs: 2025 Report on Smart Mobility, reflects evolving consumer attitudes toward EV adoption, charging infrastructure, and maintenance concerns. The survey, conducted among 2,000 U.S. adults aged 25 and older, found that while interest in EVs remains high, practical concerns continue to shape consumer decisions.

Among respondents, 51% said they would buy an EV today if upfront costs were not a factor, while only 7% currently own one. Range anxiety remains a key issue, with 71% expressing concern over EV driving range, and 46% citing charging station availability as their biggest worry. Additionally, 40% were unaware of the location of their nearest EV charging station, and 73% said they would not know how to charge an EV rental car.

Maintenance perceptions also influence consumer sentiment, with 63% believing EV upkeep is more expensive than for gas-powered vehicles and 42% thinking EVs are more likely to require roadside assistance.

Despite these concerns, industry trends suggest a long-term shift toward EV adoption. The report aligns with findings that 48% of municipal technology leaders expect EVs to become the dominant form of personal transportation within the next decade.

“Although there have been market indications that EV adoption rates are slowing down, our analysis indicates steady, albeit more cautious adoption and interest,” said Steve Lalla, executive vice president of Commercial Services at Verra Mobility. “The overall message we continue to hear is ‘it’s not if, but when’ EVs will constitute a much more significant share of vehicles on the road.”
