Mercedes-Benz’s G-Class, a legendary off-road vehicle renowned for its durability and ruggedness, has achieved a remarkable milestone. The German automaker recently disclosed that an astounding 80% of all G-Classes ever manufactured are still actively traversing roads worldwide, a testament to its enduring appeal and robust engineering.

Since its inception in 1979, the G-Class has become synonymous with off-road capability and luxury. Despite being in production for nearly half a century, the G-Class continues to captivate enthusiasts and drivers alike, showcasing its timeless design and unwavering reliability.

The introduction of the all-electric G580 EQ marks a new chapter in the G-Class’s storied history. While electric G-Class models are still in their infancy, Mercedes-Benz anticipates that it will be many decades before they become the predominant version on the roads.

“The cars have a very long lifetime,” stated Michael Schiebe, AMG chief executive and G-Class and Maybach boss, highlighting the enduring quality of the G-Class. “If you see the lifetime of a G-Wagen from 1979, I think you [will have had to have] driven many, many compact cars, in some cases, to keep up the lifetime of a G-Wagen.”

The G580 EQ boasts impressive performance figures, with four electric motors generating 579 hp and 859 lb-ft of torque, propelling the vehicle from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 4.7 seconds. Furthermore, the electric G-Class retains its legendary off-road capabilities, offering enthusiasts a compelling blend of performance and adventure.

Despite the push towards electric vehicles, Mercedes-Benz remains committed to meeting customer demands. “We try to be a customer-centric company,” Schiebe emphasized. “And if they demand V8 engines, then it is our job to supply very efficient and very powerful V8 engines.”

For those who prefer a more traditional powertrain, Mercedes-Benz continues to offer the G-Class with a six-cylinder engine. The introduction of the G580 EQ represents a strategic move to cater to customers seeking an electric alternative, ensuring Mercedes-Benz remains at the forefront of sustainable mobility solutions.
