German automotive supplier Mahle has announced its entry into the electric mountain bike (eMTB) segment with the launch of the M40, a mid-drive motor system designed for high-performance e-bikes. The move marks a significant expansion of the company’s SmartBike Systems product range, previously focused on hub-drive models.
The newly unveiled M40 system features a compact design, weighing 2.5 kilograms, and delivers up to 105 Nm of torque and 850 watts of peak power. It also introduces advanced features aimed at enhancing rider experience, such as Motor Dynamic Overrun to soften braking effects and a Hill Brake function to prevent rollback on steep gradients.
The M40 is the first release in Mahle’s new M series and is available to order immediately. It complements the company’s existing X series, which includes the X20, X30, and XS rear hub drives.
“Thanks to state-of-the-art technologies, precision engineering and intelligent connectivity, the M40 sets new standards in the category of full-power mid-motors,” said Jochen Sommer, Managing Director of Mahle SmartBike Systems. “With the M40 system, Mahle SmartBike Systems is reaffirming its claim to continue driving the development of the eBike industry in the mountain bike segment.”
The M40 system is paired with a 48V battery system, offering two options: the 534 Wh iM5 and the 800 Wh iM8. The larger battery variant can power rides up to 150 kilometers or climbs of up to 2,500 meters in altitude. Both batteries are designed to be interchangeable and support fast charging.
Mahle’s entrance into the eMTB market underscores the growing competition among component suppliers as demand for higher-performance electric bikes continues to rise. The company plans to expand the M series over the coming years, reinforcing its position in the evolving e-bike landscape.
