Horse, the powertrain company, has introduced the C15, a compact range extender that allows fully electric vehicles to be converted into range-extended EVs.
The technology is set to debut at the Munich Motor Show and is positioned as a cost-effective option for automakers looking to expand beyond battery-only platforms.
The C15 package includes a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, generator, inverter, and cooling system. In naturally aspirated form, it produces up to 94 hp (70 kW), while a turbocharged version delivers up to 161 hp (120 kW).
Despite its output, the system is small, measuring about 500 mm long, 550 mm wide, and 275 mm deep, and can be installed either horizontally or vertically. The company says the design makes it suitable even for the front storage compartment of some EVs.
“Range extended EVs are the fastest-growing powertrain category in many global markets,” said Horse Powertrain CEO Matias Giannini. “The Horse C15 range-extender solution offers OEMs a straightforward and cost-effective way to tap into this opportunity, and adapt their native BEV platforms into REEVs.”
The unit is also compatible with gasoline, ethanol, methanol flex fuels, and synthetic fuels, while being designed to meet Euro 7 emissions regulations.
