Volkswagen Anhui has produced its 100,000th smart electric vehicle at its Hefei plant, marking a production milestone for Volkswagen’s electric vehicle operations in China. The milestone vehicle was an ID. UNYX 08 and was handed to its owner at a ceremony attended by more than 200 guests.
The joint venture began mass production in February 2024 and reached the 100,000-vehicle mark in more than two years.
Volkswagen Anhui Expands EV Production
Volkswagen Anhui was established in 2017 as a joint venture between Volkswagen Group and Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group, originally under the name JAC Volkswagen Automotive Co Ltd.
The company was Volkswagen’s first joint venture in China dedicated to new energy vehicles. Volkswagen increased its stake to 75% at the end of 2020 and subsequently renamed the company Volkswagen Anhui, with operations focused on NEV research, development and manufacturing.
Its first production model was the Cupra Tavascan, which is manufactured for overseas markets.
The Hefei facility now produces models under the Cupra and ID. UNYX brands. Current products include the Cupra Tavascan and the ID. UNYX 06, ID. UNYX 07 and ID. UNYX 08.
All three ID. UNYX models were introduced during the first half of 2026, while the ID. UNYX 09 is scheduled to launch later this year.
ID. UNYX 08 Uses Xpeng Technology
The ID. UNYX 08 is the first production vehicle jointly developed by Volkswagen and Xpeng. It was launched in China on April 16 with a starting price of 229,900 yuan ($33,860).

The model uses two Turing AI chips supplied by Xpeng, with combined computing power of 1,500 TOPS. It also incorporates Xpeng’s second-generation Vision-Language-Action, or VLA 2.0, autonomous driving system.
The model forms part of Volkswagen’s strategy to incorporate locally developed technologies into its electric vehicle lineup in China.
ID. UNYX 09 to Follow
The ID. UNYX 09 will be the second production model resulting from the Volkswagen-Xpeng partnership.
Volkswagen positions the vehicle as a B-segment smart electric coupe sedan. The model appeared in a July filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The five-seat sedan measures 5,081 mm in length, 1,980 mm in width and 1,509 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,030 mm.
It will be available with either a single-motor rear-wheel-drive system producing up to 230 kW or a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with peak output of 370 kW.
Both configurations use lithium iron phosphate batteries supplied by CATL.

Volkswagen Deepens China EV Cooperation
Volkswagen and Xpeng established their strategic partnership in July 2023, when Volkswagen announced a $700 million investment in the Chinese EV manufacturer.
Volkswagen has also adjusted its sales strategy in China by allowing some FAW-Volkswagen dealerships to sell vehicles produced by Volkswagen Anhui through shop-in-shop arrangements.
The changes come as Volkswagen seeks to strengthen its position in China’s increasingly competitive electric vehicle market by combining its manufacturing capabilities with locally developed vehicle technologies.
