The Dacia Sandero and Tesla Model Y are currently engaged in a competitive race for the title of the best-selling new vehicle in Europe for the year, according to preliminary data covering January to October. Figures from Dataforce, representing 92% of sales in the European Union, EFTA countries, and the UK, reveal that the Dacia Sandero narrowly leads with 184,088 registrations, just ahead of the Tesla Model Y, which boasts 183,799 registrations during the same period.

The Sandero took the lead in October with 21,139 registrations, surpassing the Renault Clio with 14,534 registrations, while the Model Y secured the 24th position with 9,660 registrations. Analysts caution against assuming a decline in demand for the Model Y based on these figures, highlighting a pattern of lower sales in the first month of a quarter compared to the final two months. Despite its October position, the Model Y is expected to demonstrate robust sales in November and December, potentially enabling it to surpass the Sandero.

Securing the third position in Europe’s best-selling new vehicles from January to October is the VW T-Roc with 164,833 sales, followed by the Peugeot 208 with 163,672 units and the Renault Clio with 154,493 registrations.

The Model Y has witnessed a substantial surge in sales in Europe this year, experiencing a remarkable 142.3% year-to-date increase, climbing from 75,854 registrations to 183,799 by the end of October. Notably, the MG ZS is the only other car with triple-digit percentage growth, with sales rising by 107.7% from 31,971 units to 66,402. Industry observers await the final months of the year to determine the ultimate victor in this closely watched sales competition.
