Electric vehicle charging demand is rising significantly faster than new infrastructure deployment, according to data released by ChargePoint based on more than 100 million charging sessions over the past year.
Charging sessions on the company’s network increased 34% year over year, compared with a 16% rise in the number of new charging ports, suggesting a widening capacity gap as EV adoption accelerates. ChargePoint added about 190,000 ports during the period, but utilization grew nearly 20 percentage points faster.

Chief Executive Rick Wilmer said charger demand is increasingly driven by the cumulative number of electric vehicles on the road rather than annual sales figures alone. He added that infrastructure installed in the coming years could see stronger returns as existing stations face heavier use.
More than one million drivers now use ChargePoint’s network monthly, the company said. Plug-in hybrid vehicles account for roughly 16% of commercial AC charging sessions managed through the platform.
The company also highlighted the rapid acceleration of electric mobility. Of the 19.3 billion electric miles enabled on its network since its founding in 2007, nearly 60% occurred within the last two years.

ChargePoint estimates its infrastructure has displaced about 714 million gallons of gasoline, saving drivers more than $2 billion in fuel costs and preventing over 4.5 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
The company currently manages approximately 375,000 public and private charging ports directly and provides roaming access to more than 900,000 additional ports, giving drivers connectivity to over 1.3 million charging points worldwide.

The data comes amid continued growth in global electric vehicle sales, which rose about 20% in 2025. Europe led major markets with roughly 33% growth, while the United States recorded its second-strongest year for EV sales, intensifying pressure on charging networks across regions.
ChargePoint warned that unless installation rates accelerate, the imbalance between demand and available capacity could worsen in the coming years.
