Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) and BYD remained the world’s top two electric vehicle (EV) battery suppliers in the first quarter of 2025, as global demand for EVs continued to accelerate, according to data published by South Korean market research firm SNE Research.
Global EV battery consumption totaled 221.8 gigawatt-hours (GWh) from January to March, marking a 38.8% increase from the same period a year earlier.

CATL retained its position as the dominant supplier, installing 84.9 GWh of EV batteries, a 40.2% rise from 60.6 GWh in the first quarter of 2024. This gave the Chinese battery giant a 38.3% share of the global market, up slightly from 37.9% in the same period last year and from 38.2% in the first two months of 2025.
BYD, which ranked second, installed 37.0 GWh of EV batteries in the quarter, representing a 62.0% year-on-year increase. Its global market share reached 16.7%, up from 14.3% a year earlier, though slightly lower than the 16.9% recorded in the January-February period of this year.
LG Energy Solution held third place with 23.8 GWh installed and a 10.7% market share. Despite a 15.1% increase in volume from the same period last year, its market share fell from 12.9% a year ago but was up from 9.8% in the first two months of 2025.

Other key players in the top ten for global EV battery installation during the January-March period included South Korea’s SK On (4.7% share), China’s CALB (3.9%), and Gotion High-tech (3.5%). Samsung SDI and Japan’s Panasonic each held a 3.3% share, while China’s Eve Energy and Svolt Energy accounted for 2.6% and 2.5%, respectively.
