Starting one week before Christmas, Californians can apply for a state incentive of up to $2,000 toward the purchase of a new e-bike, with the state initially allocating $3 million to fund up to 1,500 e-bikes. The incentive is aimed at households earning up to 300% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), with priority given to those earning 225% of FPL or less.
For a single-person household, the maximum qualifying income is $45,180 annually, with priority for applicants earning $33,885 or less. For a four-person household, the income cap is $93,600 (300% of FPL) or $70,200 (225% of FPL) for priority applicants. Detailed income limits based on household size are available through the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
The āCalifornia E-bike Incentive Project,ā launched in partnership with over 20 community organizations, aims to encourage the use of e-bikes to reduce car trips and improve air quality. “By using e-bikes, people can get around and meet everyday needs while improving air quality,” said Dr. Steven Cliff, CARB’s Executive Officer. “Prioritizing equity and access is key as we work to achieve our zero-emissions goals, and this incentive program will support those efforts by helping e-bikes be part of the solution.”
The program officially launches on December 18, with applications opening online at 6 p.m. Once approved, eligible applicants will receive a voucher to be used at participating retailers. In addition to the application, all riders must watch a safety video before receiving their voucher.
