BYD, China’s largest new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer, reported a 21.34% year-on-year rise in NEV sales for April, delivering 380,089 units, as overseas sales continued to break records for a fifth consecutive month.
April’s sales were also up slightly from March, increasing 0.71%, according to data released by the company. BYD ceased the production and sale of internal combustion engine vehicles in March 2022, and now focuses exclusively on plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV) production.

Passenger NEVs accounted for the vast majority of deliveries, reaching 372,615 units in April, up 19.41% year-on-year. Commercial NEV sales rose to 7,474 units – a 524.39% year-on-year increase and the second consecutive monthly record.
Among passenger NEVs, BEVs led the growth with 195,740 units sold in April, marking a 45.57% jump from the same month a year earlier and a 17.84% increase from March. PHEV sales, however, dipped slightly to 176,875 units, down 0.40% year-on-year and 13.85% from the previous month.

Overseas NEV sales reached a new high of 79,086 units in April, representing a 92.84% year-on-year increase and an 8.75% rise from March. This marks the fifth consecutive month of record-breaking overseas performance for the company.
In addition to its vehicle business, BYD is China’s second-largest power battery manufacturer. The company reported 26.478 GWh in installed battery capacity for power and energy storage systems in April, up 110.83% year-on-year and 30.13% from the prior month.
