BYD reclaimed the global battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales lead in the second quarter of 2026, outperforming Tesla despite the U.S. electric vehicle maker posting its strongest quarterly delivery performance of the year.
Tesla reported global deliveries of 480,126 battery electric vehicles during the second quarter, while BYD sold 557,090 passenger BEVs over the same period.
BYD Reclaims Quarterly Lead
BYD’s second-quarter BEV sales exceeded Tesla’s deliveries by 76,964 vehicles, giving the Chinese automaker a lead of approximately 16%.
The result marks a reversal from the first quarter, when Tesla delivered around 48,000 more battery electric vehicles than BYD.
Although BYD regained the top position, its BEV sales declined 8.22% compared with the same period last year. However, sales surged 79.48% from the first quarter, when the company delivered 310,389 passenger BEVs.
Tesla, meanwhile, recorded stronger year-over-year growth. The company’s second-quarter deliveries increased 24.99% from a year earlier and rose 34.10% from the 358,023 vehicles delivered in the first quarter.
Tesla Beats Expectations
Tesla’s second-quarter performance exceeded Wall Street expectations, with analysts having forecast deliveries of approximately 406,000 vehicles.
The result represented Tesla’s strongest second quarter on record, surpassing the 466,140 vehicles delivered during the second quarter of 2023.
However, deliveries remained below the company’s all-time quarterly record of 497,099 vehicles, achieved in the third quarter of 2025 when U.S. consumers accelerated purchases ahead of the expiration of the federal electric vehicle tax credit.
Tesla also produced 451,758 vehicles during the quarter, meaning deliveries exceeded production by roughly 28,000 units. This allowed the company to reduce vehicle inventory after building unsold stock during the first quarter, when production exceeded deliveries by approximately 50,000 units.
Energy Storage Business Continues to Grow
Beyond vehicle sales, Tesla deployed 13.5 GWh of energy storage products during the second quarter, representing growth of more than 40% from a year earlier, although the figure came in slightly below analyst expectations.
BYD Maintains Annual Advantage
BYD first overtook Tesla in annual battery electric vehicle sales during 2025, delivering 2,256,714 BEVs compared with Tesla’s 1,636,129 units.
The Chinese manufacturer also sells plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, giving it a broader product portfolio than Tesla.
During the first six months of 2026, BYD sold a cumulative 867,479 passenger battery electric vehicles, maintaining its lead over Tesla’s 838,149 global deliveries.
Tesla is scheduled to release its second-quarter financial results after the U.S. market closes on July 22, when management is expected to provide further updates on the company’s financial performance and business outlook.
