BYD has sold a cumulative 50,000 vehicles in the United Kingdom since entering the market in March 2023, company officials reported on social media. The milestone was reached 32 months after the brand launched its operations in the country with the Atto 3, also known as the Yuan Plus.
The Chinese automaker’s current UK lineup includes nine models, comprising six battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and three plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). The most affordable EV in the UK market is the BYD Dolphin Surf, known in other regions as the Dolphin Mini, Atto 1, or Seagull.

Sales growth has accelerated in 2025. From January to October, BYD sold 39,103 units through around 100 retail stores, representing more than three-quarters of its total cumulative UK sales since entering the market. In September, the company experienced a reported surge of 880% in monthly sales, according to the BBC.
BYD’s current bestseller in the UK is the Seal U DM-i, a plug-in hybrid SUV priced from £33,315 ($43,840). The vehicle, measuring 4,775 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,670 mm in height, combines a 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor producing 218 horsepower. The Seal U DM-i has sold over 10,000 units in ten months, making it the UK’s top-selling plug-in hybrid SUV.

Looking ahead, BYD plans to expand its UK product range. In 2026, the company is set to introduce the Denza B5 off-road SUV, which will compete with established British off-road models, including those from Land Rover. BYD also intends to launch its luxury Yangwang brand in the UK by 2027, targeting the high-end market and competing with brands such as Bentley and Rolls-Royce.
The company’s performance in the UK reflects a broader strategy of expanding international presence, leveraging both electric and plug-in hybrid models to appeal to a growing market for low-emission vehicles.
