BMW is preparing its main plant in Munich for the production of Neue Klasse electric vehicles, with the first pre-series models set to be built this year at its Research and Innovation Centre (FIZ), the German automaker said.
The company aims to begin production of Neue Klasse models in Munich from 2026, with the plant transitioning to an all-electric vehicle production facility by 2027.

The shift marks a significant move as BMW moves away from its multi-energy approach, focusing solely on electric drivetrains to streamline manufacturing.
“For the production start of the Neue Klasse, we will have a state-of-the-art plant in Munich that is characterised by flexibility, innovation and, above all, efficiency,” said Plant Manager Peter Weber. The new platform is expected to “significantly reduce” production costs by simplifying processes and increasing automation, BMW stated.

The first Neue Klasse model, an electric SUV internally known as NA5, will enter series production at BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary by the end of this year. The Munich plant will later produce the NA0, likely the next-generation i3 sedan, followed by the NA1, an electric version of the 3 Series Touring.
BMW is constructing three new production halls in Munich for body construction, assembly, and logistics while maintaining existing vehicle production. The company expects a growing share of fully electric vehicles in the market by the end of the decade and is adjusting its global manufacturing strategy accordingly.

While Munich and Debrecen will be fully converted to EV production, other BMW plants, such as those in Dingolfing and Leipzig, will remain flexible, capable of producing both combustion and electric vehicles.
“In this way, we can ensure our delivery capabilities in different market situations and maintain good capacity utilisation at our locations,” said Milan Nedeljković, BMW’s Board Member for Production.
