BMW Motorrad to launch their second electric motorcycle in 2023

BMW CEO Oliver Zipse recently said that BMW Motorrad will launch a new electric two-wheeler every 18 to 24 months, with the next model slated to come in 2023.

Previously, BMW has launched the CE 04 electric scooter which can be said is an urban mobility vehicle. For this latest electric motorcycle, BMW plans to release a high-performance electric motor. BMW Motorrad is also rumored to have registered several trademarks, from DC 01 to DC 09 for its upcoming lineup of electric motors.

Coincidentally, the latest patent application by this German manufacturer reveals quite interesting information, namely that BMW is working on an electric motor based on Boxer elements. This is not the first time BMW has expressed such an idea, considering that the Vision DC Roadster concept itself is inspired by the Boxer engine design.

BMW Motorrad Electric Boxer Patent

Although the Vision DC Roadster concept was not intended to be a production model, it was certainly BMW’s move to explore electric motors that still carry the hallmarks of BMW motorcycles.

In this latest patent application, the battery and cooling elements of the upcoming electric motor have a shape similar to the design of the Boxer engine. These elements include a heat sink made of aluminum and covered in cooling fins, mimicking the cylinders of an air-cooled Boxer engine.

This cylinder will house the inverter, charging mechanism and internal liquid cooling system for the battery and motor. At the same time, the protruding element will allow the battery and motor to be cooled by the flow of air while the motor is moving.
