The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has published its May 2025 Gaps Progress Report, providing an update on efforts to address key standardization challenges in electric vehicle (EV) deployment across the United States. The report, compiled by ANSI’s Electric Vehicles Standards Panel (EVSP), supports the safe, large-scale adoption of EVs and charging infrastructure.
The report builds on the June 2023 “Roadmap of Standards and Codes for Electric Vehicles at Scale,” which had previously identified 37 standardization gaps—14 considered high priority, 20 medium, and three low priority.
The May 2025 update reflects new developments in standards, research, and conformity assessment activities, while also identifying additional gaps and proposing revisions to existing ones.
Of the original 37 gaps, 23 require further pre-standardization research and development. The updated report, which functions as a “living document,” highlights work by standards developing organizations (SDOs) and other stakeholders, including government agencies, industry groups, and academic institutions.
While ANSI does not develop standards directly, its EVSP plays a coordinating role in facilitating collaboration across sectors to address technical and regulatory needs for EV integration.
The report emphasizes the importance of global alignment and continued stakeholder engagement. A further update is expected this fall.
