Swedish maritime company Candela has launched the Candela P-12, the world’s first electric hydrofoil ferry, which aims to halve commute times and eliminate emissions in Stockholm’s public transport system.
The P-12, dubbed “Nova,” embarked on its maiden voyage from Tappström to Stockholm’s City Hall, covering the 15-kilometer route in about 30 minutes, effectively cutting travel times compared to existing waterborne options. This pilot project, in collaboration with Trafikverket and Region Stockholm (SL), seeks to test the feasibility of a high-speed, emissions-free maritime transport system in urban areas.
“This is a paradigm shift for urban transport and a revival of our waterways,” said Candela’s CEO Gustav Hasselskog. “For the first time, there is a vessel that makes waterborne transport faster, greener, and more affordable than land transport. It’s a renaissance for the world’s waterways, and it’s exciting that Stockholm is leading the way.”
Designed to operate above the water, the Nova uses hydrofoil technology that reduces water friction, allowing it to cruise at speeds of up to 25 knots, making it faster than traditional diesel-powered ferries.
Nova’s electric C-POD motors, which run on 100% renewable electricity and minimal noise, eliminate the need for mechanical transmissions. The P-12 charges through standard car fast chargers, making it highly adaptable for urban settings.
The energy efficiency of the P-12 is notable, with Candela estimating an 80% reduction in energy consumption compared to conventional vessels. “Conventional ships haven’t evolved much in 100 years and are among the least energy-efficient transport modes, only rivalled by a battle tank,” Hasselskog explained, underscoring the P-12’s potential to reshape sustainable urban transit. Already attracting international attention, the P-12 has orders from countries including Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, and Germany.
