Hamburger Hochbahn AG has started trial operations at its first depot in Hamburg designed exclusively for battery-electric buses. Located in Meiendorf, the facility is preparing for the introduction of an initial 30 electric buses into regular service on 13 December 2026.
During the testing phase, around 20 employees are conducting route trials with up to 10 vehicles. The programme is intended to refine operating procedures, test the depot’s infrastructure under real-world conditions and train staff ahead of the full service launch.
Passengers in north-eastern Hamburg, including Rahlstedt, Farmsen, Volksdorf and Berne, are expected to benefit as the electric bus operations are introduced.
Fleet Planned to Reach 130 Electric Buses
The Meiendorf depot is ultimately expected to accommodate 130 battery-electric buses. Its location within the service area is intended to reduce the distances vehicles travel without passengers between the depot and their routes.
Shorter empty journeys could help reduce unnecessary energy consumption and improve the daily operating efficiency of the fleet.
The trial phase will also generate operational data on the use of large-scale charging infrastructure and the management of electric buses in continuous service, providing practical experience for future fleet expansion.
Energy and Resource Management
The depot incorporates several measures designed to reduce resource consumption. Its roofs are green and equipped with photovoltaic systems to generate solar electricity.
Hamburger Hochbahn will also use waste heat from the charging equipment to heat operational buildings, recovering energy that would otherwise be lost during charging operations.
Rainwater collected at the facility will be used for vehicle cleaning, reducing demand for fresh water.
Preparing for Wider Fleet Electrification
The start of trial operations marks a step in Hamburg’s transition toward electric public transport. The Meiendorf facility combines dedicated charging infrastructure with measures for energy recovery and resource efficiency.
The initial service launch in December will be followed by a gradual expansion toward the planned 130-bus fleet as Hochbahn develops operating procedures and builds experience with the new depot.
