UK Department for Transport Launches Grant to Subsidize EV Charging Points at Educational Institutes

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has unveiled a new grant aimed at subsidizing the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging points at educational institutions, offering up to £2,500 in support.

Under this initiative, the DfT will cover up to 75% of the purchase and installation expenses for each charging point, with a maximum subsidy of £2,500. This marks a significant increase from the previous Workplace Charging Scheme, which had a cap of £350. According to government information, the cost of installing “chargepoint sockets” typically ranges between £1,500 and £2,500, depending on the location and type of installation.

The grants are accessible to state-funded schools, colleges, nurseries, and academies, with the primary objective of augmenting the availability of charging points for both staff and visitors. Additionally, educational institutions have the opportunity to generate income by making these charging points accessible to the public.

Educational institutes can submit applications for up to 40 charge points through this program, encompassing requests from the same institution across various locations and those previously submitted via the Workplace Charging Scheme.

Baroness Barran, Minister for the school system and student finance at the Department for Education, commented, “This is an exciting opportunity for schools across England to become part of an ongoing move towards a greener public sector. Schools engaging with this grant will be supporting the development of green infrastructure, helping to improve their local environments.”
