Mercedes-Benz’s All-Electric EQS SUV Launches in China with a Starting Price of $132,020

Mercedes-Benz recently launched its all-electric EQS SUV in China, with a starting price of RMB 910,500 ($132,020). This luxury car is the first SUV based on Mercedes’ EVA platform and is currently offered in three versions. While the vehicle’s specifications are impressive, its high price tag may hinder sales in China.

The EQS SUV measures 5,137 mm in length, 1,965 mm in width, and 1,721 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,210 mm. It has a battery pack with a capacity of 111.8 kWh, which supports a maximum charging power of 145 kW, allowing for a charging time from 10% to 80% in 37 minutes. The vehicle can travel up to 742 km on a single charge, making it an attractive option for those seeking long-range EVs.

Chinese consumers can currently only purchase the imported version of the model. However, Mercedes-Benz has announced that the EQE SUV will soon be produced in China, along with the Maybach EQS SUV, which will make its global debut at the Shanghai auto show in April.

This is not the first time Mercedes-Benz has released pure electric models in China, as they have previously introduced the EQC, EQS, EQE, EQA, and EQB. However, sales of these models have been lukewarm, with the EQC experiencing motor problems in early 2022, resulting in a recall for the model.

As a result of the unsatisfactory sales, Mercedes-Benz announced a reduction of up to RMB 237,600 in the suggested retail prices of some EQ series models on November 15, 2022. While this may increase interest in their EVs, it remains to be seen if it will be enough to attract Chinese consumers, who have demonstrated a preference for more affordable EV options such as NIO SUV models and Tesla Model Y.
