Iberdrola España has inaugurated the first of 98 planned electric vehicle (EV) charging points in Murcia, marking the beginning of a city-wide initiative to expand EV infrastructure. The project, agreed upon with Murcia City Council in December, will eventually provide 190 charging bays across the city.
The initial stations have been installed adjacent to Iberdrola España’s offices, with future locations to be distributed throughout Murcia. The network will include 40 fast chargers with a 50 kW output, alongside semi-fast 22 kW chargers, enabling simultaneous charging for up to 190 vehicles. The chargers will be integrated with Iberdrola’s public charging app, allowing users to locate, reserve, and pay for charging sessions via mobile devices, while the fast chargers will also feature card payment terminals.
Murcia Mayor José Ballesta said the initiative reflects the city’s ongoing environmental efforts, emphasizing a “green, shared future” for the community. Enrique Planells, Iberdrola’s regional manager for large customers and public administrations, noted that the partnership supports the development of an accessible charging network and promotes emissions-free transport, contributing to residents’ well-being.
Iberdrola has previously partnered with other Spanish cities on large-scale EV charging projects, including the opening of Madrid’s largest fast-charging hub in June. The company currently operates nearly 10,000 public charging points across Spain, all powered by renewable energy.
