Xiaomi has filed a single-motor variant of its YU7 SUV with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), signaling the company’s ongoing expansion into the electric vehicle (EV) market. The filing follows a dual-motor version submission last month, with both versions nearing regulatory approval.
According to the MIIT’s catalog released on Thursday, the YU7 single-motor variant is powered by a 235 kW motor and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries supplied by BYD’s FinDreams Battery. The vehicle measures 4,999 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,608 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm and a top speed of 240 km/h.
The dual-motor version, previously filed, features front and rear motors with peak outputs of 220 kW and 288 kW, respectively, and uses Li-ion ternary batteries supplied by CATL. Xiaomi plans to launch the YU7, its second EV model after the SU7 sedan, in June or July 2025.
Xiaomiās YU7 will compete with Teslaās updated Model Y, which debuted in China this week. Tesla has introduced two āLaunch Seriesā variants of the refreshed Model Y, with deliveries expected to start in March. Tesla’s marketing emphasized its confidence in the updated Model Y, suggesting it would be hard to surpass.
In response, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun shared Tesla’s promotional content on Weibo, adding a simple “OK,” hinting at the YU7’s potential to rival the Model Y. As Xiaomi continues its push into EVs, the YU7’s competitive positioning will be critical in capturing market share against established players like Tesla.
