Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun responded to Tesla’s launch of the refreshed Model Y in China with a cryptic remark, hinting that Xiaomi’s upcoming YU7 SUV may pose strong competition.
Tesla unveiled its revamped Model Y in China, with promotional material implying unmatched superiority over competing models. In response, Lei Jun shared a screenshot of Tesla’s message on Weibo, commenting simply, “Ok.” While brief, Lei’s statement suggests confidence in the competitive edge of Xiaomi’s YU7, set to launch in mid-2025.
The YU7, Xiaomi EV’s second electric vehicle model, follows the success of its SU7 sedan, which debuted in March 2024, delivering over 135,000 units by year-end. Regulatory filings reveal the YU7’s specifications: it measures 4,999 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,600 mm in height, with a 3,000 mm wheelbase. Powered by dual electric motors producing 220 kW and 288 kW, the YU7 supports a top speed of 253 km/h and weighs 2,405 kg.
In comparison, Tesla’s facelifted Model Y measures slightly smaller at 4,797 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,624 mm in height, with a 2,890 mm wheelbase. It weighs significantly less, with variants at 1,921 kg and 1,992 kg, contributing to greater energy efficiency.
The Model Y offers two configurations: a rear-wheel-drive version with a 62.5 kWh battery providing a range of 593 km (CLTC) and a long-range all-wheel-drive version with a 78.4 kWh battery offering 719 km (CLTC), Tesla’s longest range to date.
Xiaomi’s YU7 faces a competitive benchmark in Tesla’s Model Y, known for its efficiency and market dominance. The outcome of this rivalry will depend on consumer reception to Xiaomi’s technological and design advancements when the YU7 hits the market.
