Ontario-based pickup truck specialist Worksport has announced the initiation of its development program for a solar tonneau cover designed specifically for the Ford F-150 Lightning, marking a significant milestone for America’s best-selling electric pickup.

The innovative solar tonneau cover aims to provide power to the F-150 Lightning by harnessing solar energy, offering a more sustainable alternative to traditional grid charging methods. While the technology is still in its developmental stages, Worksport is focusing on optimizing its performance to ensure efficient charging during daytime hours, considering factors such as the F-150 Lightning’s size, weight, and limited bed area.

Worksport believes that the Solis solar tonneau cover has the potential to increase the F-150 Lightning’s daily range by up to 10 miles, a modest yet impactful improvement in overall efficiency.

While electric vehicles have gained popularity, solar charging systems have not been widely commercialized due to their limited charging performance. For example, Fisker’s SolarSky roof on the Ocean SUV adds only five miles of range per day, totaling about 1,500 miles per year.

Tesla has also explored the idea of integrating solar technology into its vehicles, but has yet to offer a solar roof option to customers. However, some Tesla owners have taken matters into their own hands, developing aftermarket solar roofs to add range to their vehicles.

Worksport’s Solis solar tonneau cover represents a step forward in sustainable transportation technology, aligning with Ford’s vision of a more sustainable energy grid. The company plans to offer the tonneau cover with the Solis and COR battery bundle, allowing solar power to be used without draining the EV’s onboard power reserves.

“We look forward to sharing the results of our tests and bringing this transformative product to the market,” said Steven Rossi, CEO of Worksport. “Worksport is at the forefront of integrating solar technology with automotive accessories, and the Solis solar cover for the Ford F-150 Lightning is a testament to our innovative spirit and dedication to sustainability.”
