Fleet payments provider WEX has launched an upgraded fleet card that allows customers to pay for both conventional fuel and public electric vehicle charging through a single account, as fleet operators increasingly manage a mix of internal combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles.
WEX said the new card combines fueling and EV charging payments within its proprietary closed-loop network, giving fleets access to more than 175,000 public charging ports and coverage at over 90% of U.S. gasoline stations. The company said it is the first fuel card provider to offer unified fuel and EV payments at scale within a closed-loop system.

“Our customers want one solution that works everywhere, and that’s exactly what we’re delivering with EV payments built directly into this new WEX Fleet card,” said Carlos Carriedo, chief operating officer for Americas Payments and Mobility at WEX. “It’s simplicity at scale for mixed-energy operations.”
Fleet operators have faced fragmented payment workflows as they add electric vehicles, often relying on multiple cards, mobile apps and separate invoices. WEX said its updated card consolidates transactions into one account and one invoice, allowing fleet managers to track all fueling and charging activity through a single reporting system.

The card includes embedded radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology, enabling drivers to initiate EV charging sessions without separate charging cards or apps. Transactions are processed through WEX’s closed-loop network rather than general-purpose payment networks, which the company said allows for enhanced security, richer data capture and fleet-specific purchase controls.
WEX said the system integrates with its En Route EV platform, which provides real-time charger availability, remote session activation and detailed transaction data. Fleet managers can set controls and review activity through existing WEX tools, including the DriverDash app, using a single credit line for both fuel and charging expenses.

The upgraded WEX Fleet card is available immediately to eligible customers. Existing users can enable EV payments through the WEX online portal or receive updated cards during scheduled renewal cycles, the company said.
The launch comes as U.S. commercial fleets gradually electrify portions of their vehicles, driving demand for payment and reporting systems that can support both legacy fueling and emerging charging needs without adding administrative complexity.
