WeRide and Uber have expanded their Robotaxi operations in Abu Dhabi to include Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands, in coordination with the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC). The expansion is expected to double ride volumes and significantly increase the service area, which now includes parts of Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and highway routes to and from Zayed International Airport.
Since launching their joint service in December 2024, WeRide and Uber have tripled the size of their Robotaxi fleet in Abu Dhabi. Both companies intend to expand further later this year, with plans to operate in Khalifa City, Masdar City, and other areas of downtown Abu Dhabi.
The network utilizes WeRide’s GXR model — a mass-produced autonomous vehicle designed for commercial deployment that seats up to five passengers. Each vehicle is projected to complete multiple trips per day during 12-hour operating shifts, with average ride distances exceeding six kilometers.
“Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands are high-demand areas and serve as key gateways to Abu Dhabi. This expansion gives us the opportunity to reach more passengers, showcase our advanced technology in complex urban settings, and further accelerate the deployment of autonomous vehicles across the city,” said Jennifer Li, CFO and Head of International at WeRide.
According to Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre, the expansion aligns with the city’s ongoing initiatives to develop a smart and efficient transport system. “We are committed to embracing innovative and sustainable solutions to enhance our transport network and improve the quality of life for our residents,” said Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director General of the ITC.
Uber also noted the broader strategic aim of increasing access to autonomous mobility services. “Just as Uber helped millions experience electric vehicles for the first time, 2025 will be the year we bring AV technology into the mainstream,” said Mohamad Jardaneh, Head of Autonomous Mobility, Middle East at Uber.
