Volkswagen is preparing a major refresh for its ID.4 electric SUV, with significant updates to both exterior styling and interior features, the company said. The updated model, expected to arrive in late 2026, will align with the automaker’s new electric vehicle design direction, beginning with the ID.3 earlier that year.
The facelifted ID.4 will adopt Volkswagen’s latest styling language showcased in the ID.2all concept car, with a lower and wider stance and streamlined character lines. According to Autocar, VW’s head of technical development, Kai Grünitz, confirmed that the ID.3 would be the first to adopt the new design in 2026, followed by the ID.4. “The design will bring a family resemblance to the ID.2,” Grünitz told the magazine.
The update will also include a substantial overhaul of the interior, including a redesigned dashboard and the reintroduction of physical controls—marking a departure from the touch-sensitive interface of earlier models. A Volkswagen insider told Autocar: “We’re going to bring back a round knob for the volume control… it has worked for years, there’s no reason to replace it.”
Volkswagen head of design Andreas Mindt previously emphasized the significance of the ID.2all interior concept, saying, “The future of Volkswagen interiors has arrived in the ID 2all concept car,” which is expected to influence the redesigned ID.4’s cabin.
The new ID.4 will also see technical improvements in range and performance as Volkswagen advances its EV platforms and electric motor technologies. While final specifications remain under wraps, VW has said its goal is to deliver more practical, user-friendly EVs for a growing customer base.
Volkswagen is also expanding its electric lineup, with the production version of the ID.2 set to launch alongside an SUV variant and a more affordable ID.1 model. The current ID.4 retails for $45,095 in the U.S. with an EPA-estimated range of 291 miles, while in Europe, it starts at around €35,000 ($41,000) with a WLTP range of up to 550 km (342 miles).
