Tesla’s Megafactory in Shanghai is scheduled to officially start production on February 11, 2025, marking a significant milestone for the electric vehicle (EV) maker’s energy storage operations. This follows trial production that began in late 2024. A ceremony to mark the factory’s official start will be held at the Megafactory in the Shanghai Lingang district, according to a report by local media outlet Shanghai Securities News.

The facility, which was completed in December 2024 after just seven months of construction, will begin ramping up production in the first quarter of 2025. This rapid pace of construction sets a new “Tesla Speed” benchmark for the company’s global manufacturing efforts. Tesla initiated the construction of the Shanghai Megafactory in May 2024, marking its first energy storage project outside the United States.

Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory is focused on producing Megapacks, large-scale commercial energy storage units. These units are designed to stabilize the grid and prevent power outages by storing energy. The Megapack can store over 3 MWh of energy, enough to power approximately 3,600 homes for one hour. With a production capacity of up to 10,000 units per year, the factory is expected to produce nearly 40 GWh of energy storage annually, enough to power around 50,000 homes in Shanghai for a year.

The first customer for the Megapack from Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory is the Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group, which signed an agreement with Tesla during a groundbreaking ceremony in May 2024. Tesla’s energy storage products, which also include the Powerwall and Powerpack, are expected to be distributed globally, with the Megapack serving as the flagship offering for commercial applications.

As part of the factory’s supply chain, CATL  is reported to be the main supplier of battery cells for the Megapacks, with BYD’s FinDreams Battery also serving as an alternative supplier. Tesla’s Shanghai Megafactory is poised to play a crucial role in supporting global energy storage needs while contributing to the company’s broader sustainability efforts.
