Tesla said it has produced its 1,000th Megapack energy storage unit at its Shanghai Megafactory, less than six months after production began at the site. The milestone unit will be shipped to Europe, the company announced on Chinese social media platform X.
Construction of the Shanghai Megafactory began on May 23, 2024, marking Tesla’s first dedicated energy storage facility outside the United States. Located in the Lingang area of Pudong—home to Tesla’s China electric vehicle plant—the facility began operations on February 11.
“From the first unit to the 1,000th, the Shanghai factory achieved this milestone in less than six months,” the company said in its statement. Tesla added that its energy storage products are now present in over 65 countries and regions, helping “improve power generation and transmission efficiency” and “enable grids to operate more efficiently.”
The factory manufactures Tesla’s Megapack—its largest energy storage product designed for commercial utility use. A single Megapack can store approximately 3,900 kWh of electricity, roughly equal to the battery capacity of 62 Model 3 rear-wheel-drive vehicles. The system, which resembles a large shipping container and weighs more than 38 tons, is used to stabilize electrical grids and prevent power outages.
Tesla aims to reach an annual production capacity of 10,000 Megapack units at the Shanghai site, equivalent to nearly 40 GWh of energy storage—enough, the company said, to supply power to approximately 50,000 households in Shanghai for one year.
The first overseas shipment of Megapacks from the Shanghai facility took place on March 21, less than six weeks after the plant began operating.
