Tesla has begun deploying a software update enabling its in-cabin radar system, a long-anticipated feature designed to enhance passenger safety and occupancy detection. The update, version 2025.2.6, is initially rolling out to 2022 and later Model Y units, with plans to expand to refreshed Model 3 and Cybertruck models.
The in-cabin radar, positioned above the passenger dome light, uses radio waves to detect occupants more precisely than the existing interior camera.

According to Tesla’s owner’s manual, the system can identify passengers in the front and rear seats, adjusting airbags and safety features accordingly. The 4D radar technology can even detect a pet’s or child’s heartbeat, adding an extra layer of protection against passengers being left behind.
During a recent interview with Tesla Owners Silicon Valley, Model Y Program Manager Emmanuel Lamacchia explained that future updates will introduce proactive safety measures.

These could include alerts to owners, automatic activation of the HVAC system, window adjustments, or even emergency calls to 911 if an unattended child or pet is detected. The company expects these features to be enabled in refreshed models by the third quarter of this year.
Tesla’s Lead Cybertruck Engineer emphasized the importance of the update, noting that while incidents involving unattended passengers are rare, their consequences can be severe. The new in-cabin radar system aims to mitigate such risks, reinforcing Tesla’s focus on safety innovation.
