Tallinn Airport has completed the first phase of a major upgrade to its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, installing 32 new AC charging stations in the basement level of its multi-storey car park. The expansion, developed in partnership with Estonian energy company Alexela AS, is aimed at supporting the growing number of EV users traveling through the airport.
The newly designated EV zone features 22kW AC chargers with integrated Type 2 cables, suitable for both battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Charging is restricted to actively charging vehicles only, with payment options available through the Alexela mobile app, online portal, or payment cards. Tallinn Airport has confirmed that the chargers are powered by its on-site solar array, when weather conditions allow.
“Our aim is to offer a service that gives our customers peace of mind – they can leave their car at the airport and return to a fully charged vehicle,” said Eero Pärgmäe, Member of the Management Board at Tallinn Airport. “Depending on the popularity of the charging area, we are prepared to increase the number of chargers in the future.” However, the airport has not specified how it will enforce the policy requiring cars to be actively charging while parked.
Kristjan Suurorg, Head of E-Mobility at Alexela, emphasized the strategic importance of the collaboration. “Our goal is to make everyday charging a natural part of the user journey – whether at home, on the road, or at the destination,” Suurorg said, highlighting how the project demonstrates the integration of charging infrastructure in public spaces.
Tallinn Airport’s move reflects a broader push across Europe to scale up EV infrastructure, particularly in high-traffic transport hubs. Future expansion of the charging area is already being considered based on usage demand.
