In a strong showing of growth, Subaru of America Inc. reported that its May car sales in the United States rose to 58,356 units, marking a 7.0% increase compared to the same period last year. This achievement signifies the 22nd consecutive month of year-over-year growth for the automaker, with year-to-date sales reaching 267,215 units, up 7.3% from last year.
A significant contributor to this growth has been the impressive performance of the Subaru Solterra, the brand’s all-electric SUV. Last month, Subaru recorded a tripling of its electric vehicle (EV) sales, with Solterra sales totaling 1,546 units, marking a remarkable 255% increase year-over-year. This surge in sales follows a previous record set in April, where 1,456 Solterra units were sold.
The Subaru Solterra also saw its share of the brand’s total volume in May rise to a record 2.65%, showcasing its increasing popularity among consumers. This positive trend suggests a promising future for the model, with potential for further expansion.
Year-to-date, Subaru has sold 4,149 Solterra units in the U.S., marking a 73% increase from the previous year and accounting for 1.6% of the brand’s total volume. In 2023, Subaru sold a total of 8,872 Solterra units, representing about 1.4% of its total sales, with cumulative sales nearing 14,000 units.

The Subaru Solterra shares its platform with the Toyota bZ4X and Lexus RZ, both of which are based on the Toyota e-TNGA platform, known as the e-Subaru Global Platform in Subaru’s lineup. While sales figures for these models are reported quarterly, their performance is relatively similar to that of the Solterra.
With its impressive sales figures and growing market share, the Subaru Solterra is on track to surpass its 2023 sales performance, signaling a strong market acceptance of Subaru’s foray into the electric vehicle segment.
